As the population ages we will need to provide for the care and wellbeing of older people in our community. How can we provide take care of and promote wellbeing for older people in our community?

I guess when the Surfcoast Shire was brazen or brave enough to send out their brochure "Where Do My Rates Go?", stating how much each individual property contributed to various Council Services, etc., they must have known there would be some strong comment!

I was appalled to see that my property's rates paid $131.15 for Council & Executive support and $76.38 for Information Technology, and yet Positive Ageing only received a mere $37.65.

How can this be??? Our older citizens are just SO much more important than many of the items included in this brochure, and yet this is all that is set aside for their care. Disgraceful.

Jan Juc is not a sleeper Comment 2 13 Sep 2010, 10:25 AM

Well being is not defined by how many people are in an area but rather by the quality of their life. Quality of life in addition to the availability of services is also defined bythe atmosphere and character of the area. the state government is developing Precinct development plans across the state. why is the Shire not doing the same for both Jan Juc and Torquay. Jan Juc and Torquay need separate development plans to enable the two communities to develop with their own identity. They do ne need to be engulfed by a sleeper suburb for Geelong and Melbourne(with more…

In the past I have been opposed to the construction of footpaths in old Torquay but as the population has increased I have become concerned about the number of older people who walk on the roads because the nature strips are too uneven for safe walking. It may have been acceptable when there was a small permanent population but with the number of cars on the roads now it has become downright dangerous. Maybe it is time to construct a safe footpath on at least one side of each street in old Torquay.

Once again, we need provision of adequate services and affordable housing, so pensioners can actually still afford their rates! Much better public transport is required for those who don't drive; such as a small minibus type service year round going to shops and Drs surgery (like the one which operates only in summer.) We also need lots of nice shady parks for the elderly to sit in and enjoy on their walks around town. With population expected to grow, we will probably need a decent nursing home (preferably government run with mandated nurse ratios for proper care) or visiting specialist more…
